School Oral Health Program in Tenerife

The first school-based dental education program in Tenerife, pioneering since 1990 in the Isla Baja region.

✽  Desde 1990

El primer programa de educación dental escolar de Tenerife

In 1990, la Dr. Claudia Rodríguez Maradei  brought oral health prevention into classrooms in Garachico for the first time, on a completely voluntary basis. The project was pioneering on the island and received first prize in the Master’s Program in Primary Care at the University of the Basque Country.

Since then, the program has continued to grow. Today it operates across five municipalities in northern Tenerife, supported by local councils and social services.

✽  Why it works

Why children’s oral hygiene matters more than you think

Oral diseases are among the most common health issues in childhood and are largely preventable. A child who learns to detect dental plaque and brush properly before the age of 10 is far more likely to maintain these habits for life.

Our program does more than teach technique: it involves families and teachers to ensure lasting, real change.

 Can your child take part?

✽  Methodology

Three pillars that make the difference

An approach that goes beyond the classroom and involves the whole educational community.

Learning by doing

Hands-on classroom sessions where children identify dental plaque and practice proper brushing techniques. No theory without practice.

Families are part of it too

Parents and teachers become health promoters, reinforcing at home what is learned at school. A habit practiced as a family becomes a lasting one.

Supported by local councils

Municipal social services select participants and monitor the program, ensuring continuity and real impact.
